God Glorified in the Work of Redemption, by the Greatness of Man’s Dependence upon Him in the Whole of It, was preached on the Publick Lecture in Boston, July 8, 1731. (First preached in the fall of 1730 in Northampton.) This Thursday lecture was traditionally held at the First Church of Boston. Jonathan Edwards was 28, and it was to become his first printed sermon. People are dependent on God because of their insufficiency, helplessness, and sinfulness and this sermon explains how God is glorified by this condition. This edition includes the introductory advertisement by Rev. Thomas Prince (Old South Church) and Rev. William Cooper (Brattle Street Church).

In these sermons Jonathan Edwards is expounding I Corinthians 1:29-31.In the context I Corinthians chapter one where God declares that the wisdom of men is brought to nothing by God and 'The Preaching Of The Cross'(which is foolishness to the wise one's of this world but reveals the power and wisdom of God).Mr Edwards notes that Corinth was close to Athens,which was the center of philosophy and the world's wisdom at this time in history.The city of Corinth was no doubt influenced by Athens and sought to follow them in being a center for learning and acquiring wisdom.Edwards comments on how foolish they were in reality-"...by all their wisdom did not know God,they were not able to find out the truth in Divine things." In that which is of the greatest importance,by far,they were ignorant-In the knowledge of God.This is God choosing the foolish things of the world to confound the wise,and the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;and what is God's reason for doing this-'that no flesh should glory in his presence.' What God aims at according to the author-"It is that no man should glory in himself,but alone in God."How does God accomplish his design in redemption(that of man not glorying in himself,but in God alone)-"...by that absolute and immediate dependence which men have upon God in that work...".J.C.Ryle and David Charles have published sermons in print on Colossians 3:11 'But Christ is all,and in all',and here we have a similar stating of that truth-all the wisdom God's people have is in him,their righteousness is in Christ alone,They are sanctified in him and they are redeemed by him.Edwards has a wise observation re-these things-"all the good of the fallen and redeemed creature is concerned in these four things..."(Wisdom,Righteousness,Sanctification and Redemption).The great ones in the world search for wisdom but wisdom in 'Divine Matters' is not to be found outside of Christ.Just as the righteousness,to stand justified before a holy God,cannot be obtained apart from his son.Apart from being in a right relationship with God through the person and work of his son,men are void of that which they need the most-Romans 12:36 'For of him,and through him,and to him,or in him,are all things.'
In this Christ exalting sermon the Pastor theologian is convinced that we are even more dependent upon 'The Goodness Of God' under the covenant of grace than man was under the covenant of works.Jonathan Edwards was greatly used of the Lord in 'The Great Awakening' in the early part of the 18th century in Colonial America.Sermons such as will help one to see why that was the case.

Jonathan Edwards preached this sermon on the exposition of 1 Corinthians 129-31 in Boston, July 8, 1731. He published this, his first work, at the desire of several ministers and others who had heard it. The primary doctrine was that, "God is glorified in the work of redemption in this, that there appears in it so absolute and universal a dependence of the redeemed on him." Quoting from the manuscript, Edwards concern was to note "that there is an absolute and universal dependence of the redeemed on God for all their good, and that God hereby is exalted and glorified in the work of redemption."
Great read for me!
This book is really a great book but if you just want to "read" about his life it is a bit cumbersome as it looks more into his perspective of life and his walk with the Lord than just giving you an insight into his life and what he did with the orphanages.
