This is an amazing book, I had to do a person for the wax museum and my mother told me about Naya Nuki so I read this book and I absolutely loved it. Yes, there are some intense moments throughout this book however they are easy to "downsize" if you happen to be reading aloud to a smaller child. While this is a great book no matter your age, I recommend not reading until the age of 12-13 because once you reach that age, you can fully appreciate the beauty and power this book contains. It might sound lame or a bit nerdy to say a book contains power and beauty but I find that when I read, the time goes by quickly and if I have to put down the book to do something, I very much regret that I can't read faster and promise myself to work on it so I don't have to put down a book again. I love that this book is not only an inspiring story of unity and self-confidence, but also a true story. This definitely made me respect the Shoshoni Indians way more than I did because these guys didn't try to stay fights and wars like a lot of other Indian tribes did, they liked peace. I'll quit ranting now, I'm sure you're all bored of my review of you didn't just look at it and go 'that looks to long.' Thanks for readin' y'all! Great young readers, coming of age novel.
I remember meeting Kenneth Thomasma in 6th grade. He did a short story project and awarded students illustrations from his books as a reward for doing well. I'm proud to say I still have the two posters I won!
The story is gripping. When my mom bought the books and read them to us, I was transfixed. I re-read them several times and wondered at the courage and strength these amazing girls showed. Now, I'm downloading his books to my and I'm using them in my home school Social Studies curriculum.
Thank you Kenneth, for writing such amazing books and helping me love literature!
Great transaction. The book was exactly as advertised!
What a sweet and courageous story! My 4th grader loved it as a read-aloud for homeschooling. It taught a lot about survival skills and perseverance.
a good story of struggle and hardship that ends in great joy through perseverance.
My grand-daughter loved it. Anything can happen when you don't give up.
One of my favorites.
I read this out loud to my daughter. This story made a great little unit study on Naya Nuki's people. I have a much better appreciation and love for the Shoshoni people after reading this book. Although, it does have some sad parts, the lessons of a courageous spirit in this story far out weigh any sadness.
side note if you are reading to young children, you might want to sensor one part where Naya Nuki's mother cuts herself to grieve for the loss of her son. Also, the is a scene where she comes across an indian burial site that is scary to her. So there are a few intense scenes but easy enough to sensor to be age appropriate.
A classic book.
